The Lisbon Project is a non-profit organization that exists to protect and integrate the lives of migrants and refugees in the city of Lisbon. We are currently seeking a coordinator for the team of Portuguese volunteer-teachers. This person will be responsible for the successful delivery of the intensive Portuguese courses at Lisbon Project. This role is a great opportunity to develop several professional skills, namely, people and project management, communicative and organizational skills, but above all, to make a huge impact in the lives of migrants, refugees and volunteers by leading one of the most demanded activities at Lisbon Project. The coordinator will have the support of the program manager as well as the teacher’s trainer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the Education Program Manager in growing and improving the Portuguese courses.
Maintain frequent and open communication with the Education team of the Lisbon Project to report on findings and discuss opportunities for improvement. Ideally, meet the Edu PM at least once a week for support and to align on tasks.
Recruit and onboard new volunteer teachers if needed in close collaboration with People & Culture and the Education PM.
Update course plans and any other documents necessary at the start of a new round of courses.
Support the Portuguese volunteer-teachers in anything they may need including making sure they have all materials necessary and that the online/offline classrooms are available to use and in good condition.
Support the Edu assistant ensuring volunteer teachers provide attendance data in the records created for that purpose.
Organize and lead weekly meetings with the teachers, and/or or schedule individual meetings with the teachers regularly to better engage with them.
Organize and lead focus groups with teachers and CMs among other means of getting feedback from students’ and teachers’ experience.
Organize and support in the delivery of mid-course and end-of-course tests.
Organize and lead the Graduation Ceremonies.
In everything we do, remember our students at Lisbon Project need to learn Portuguese, but the main goal is that they integrate into Portugal and strengthen their feeling of belonging in this country, so it feels like home.
OPTIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Keep track of students’ attendance and contact community members on WhatsApp from the Education phone when they miss a lesson.
Support the Teacher Trainer in the development and delivery of training sessions for teachers.
Organize team building activities for your team.
Teach one of the intensive courses fully or together with another teacher.
Requirements:
Minimum Education Level: Upper Secondary Education
Native or C1 level of Portuguese
Qualified in language teaching not mandatory, but preferred.
At least 2 years’ experience teaching languages.
A conversational level of English would be ideal.
Commitment of 10-15hs a week, in person or online. (negotiable)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective listening.
Cultural awareness and ability to interact with people from different cultures, genders, religions, and backgrounds.
